GLOEOCAPSA MAGMA

What is Gloeocapsa Magma?

Gloeocapsa magma is a type of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that is commonly found on roofs, sidewalks, and other outdoor surfaces. It appears as dark streaks or stains, particularly on asphalt shingles, and thrives in warm, humid environments. This bacterium feeds on the limestone filler in roofing materials, which can lead to roof deterioration over time.

Characteristics of Gloeocapsa Magma:

  • Appearance: Dark green, black, or brown streaks on surfaces.

  • Habitat: Roofs, concrete, and outdoor structures, especially in humid climates.

  • Growth: Forms colonies that retain moisture, promoting further growth and damage.

  • Impact: Can degrade roofing materials and reduce energy efficiency by absorbing heat.

How to Prevent Gloeocapsa Magma:

  • Cleaning: Soft washing with a roof washing detergent can eliminate the bacteria.

  • Preventative Measures: Zinc or copper strips installed on roofs help inhibit growth.

  • Regular Maintenance: Keeping the roof clean and free from debris reduces buildup.
